Karen Pickering hosts Meet Cute: Materialists. We’ve survived a global pandemic and the advent of dating apps and it’s now time to get back together IRL, with events for face to face dating over shared interests and at TPH that’s cinema!

The first in our series is Materialists, Celine Song’s eagerly awaited new film where a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex. This special one-off event will be hosted by Karen Pickering, with tunes from DJ Gemma Jones.

The world has been waiting with bated breath for the follow up to Celine Song’s epic debut, Past Lives, a tender portrait of love, loss and longing. In what is perhaps an unlikely twist June sees the release of Materialists, a romantic comedy that is elegant and elevated but no less effervescent than the best of the genre. Song interrogates the usual tropes with a sharp eye, blending her signature aesthetic with a cracking chemistry between the leads.

Above all, this film is FUN and will remind us all why people keep dating: in the hope that all the flirting, false starts and trying again will lead to falling breathlessly in love – Song wants us to know that sometimes we get there via a few unexpected detours. What better occasion than to invite those looking for connection to join us at the premiere, for a sparkling evening of introduction, meeting other lovers, and maybe even their very own romance?

Enjoy a glass of sparkling on arrival and an introduction to the film from host, Karen Pickering, guests can meet each other in the lobby before the film, and we’ll have pen and paper on hand for anyone brave enough to write a little love note (or just their phone number). With love in the air and a brilliant film to watch together, at the very least friendships will be made, and maybe even more.
