Lou

SAFF23 presents LOU – A live music and cinema performance of a new composition by Sarah Hardiman (Deaf Wish, Moon Rituals, Brickhead) in their solo mode – LOU. LOU will live-respond musically to archival video footage from Melbourne’s deep western suburbs. Shot in the early 90s, the footage features formative places and faces from LOU’s childhood.

LOU’s highly acclaimed debut album ‘For the Morning’, a bucolic guitar-driven instrumental piece, came out in 2021. LOU’s performance of the album at Meredith 2022 alongside Steph Crase, Raven Mahon, Daniel Twoombs, Alice Gaynor and Mikey Young as the sun rose over 15,000 very hungover people was described as “truly medicinal”. With a guitar style compared to William Tyler or Bill Frisell, or “Durutti Column minus the Englishness”, expect a raw but transcendent reflection on childhood and change.

Leading Naarm contemporary feminist music collective Sonic aGender presents the inaugural Sonic aGender Film Festival 2023, exploring music, gender and the moving image. SAFF23 considers music and film culture through a collage of music video clip curation and commentary, commissioned live music performance, feature documentary and sick afterparty vibes.
