Dogs in Space: Ollie Olsen Benefit
Ollie Olsen did the soundtrack for this classic film and the screening is also a fundraiser for Ollie and his medical needs. ” TPH
With introduction from director, Richard Lowenstein, this Australian classic is a slice-of-life portrait of the odd assortment of characters populating a ramshackle house 1978 Richmond.
“Dogs in Space is also a historical document for reasons other than its set and setting. It features one of the few film performances of INXS front man Michael Hutchence, who headlines the cast as Sam, leader of a band from which the film takes its name. They mostly play in the central shared house setting, nowhere big or special, and certainly nowhere without booze splattered on the floor. The first time we see the house is a slow zoom in accompanied with music from Melbourne indie radio station Triple R playing in the background and a girl sitting on the front steps looking anxious. The terrace is down a narrow one way street, part of a cosmopolitan network of alleyways and dimly lit bars with filthy toilets and no-name bands – Melbourne through and through.” The Guardian
Ollie Olsen was a true champion of the musical underground in Melbourne since the late 70s. Ollie was involved in an early punk band with Roland S Howard (The Young Charlatans) and went on to form influential outfits such as Whirlywirld, Hugo Klang, Orchestra of Skin & Bone, NO, Taipan Tiger Girls, Max Q and the pioneering electronic record label Psy Harmonics.
On a film level, was also the musical director on Richard Lowenstein’s seminal classic DOGS IN SPACE , a film we have shown a number of times now – once with Ollie in attendance to introduce, another as a fundraiser for Ollie.
Ollie’s friend and co-founder of Psy-Harmonics, Andrew Till will also be DJ’ing in the bar – playing a bunch of Ollie’s songs and some of Ollie’s favourite records too before the screening.
100% of ticket revenue will be going to Ollie’s widow, Jayne Olsen and TPH thanks all the contributors for their generosity.
