DIRECTORS Q&A SCREENING

Recently graduated Melbourne private schoolboys Ayden, a book-smart prodigy turned drug dealer, and Jesse, a charismatic rebel, crash into another car late one night and flee to the city to escape the consequences.

Safe (or so they think) in the anonymity of the CBD, the adrenaline hits and the boys figure they should celebrate their close call with a drink. One drink quickly devolves into a night of unbridled debauchery and rapidly escalating violence. Meanwhile, the police are closing in and the boys can only hide under the cover of night for so long.

Pure Scum is a gritty, no holds barred examination of private school culture and the toxic masculinity that can fester in environments of extreme wealth and privilege. Interweaving interview footage with parents and friends of the boys as a narrative device throughout, Pure Scum exposes the dark side of Australia’s “larrikin” culture in a distinctly Melburnian thriller.
