The Reason I Jump (Relaxed Screening)

An extraordinary cinematic experience...the empathy it engenders is deeply felt and enormously eye-opening. ” Flick Filosopher

Winner of multiple awards including Best Documentary at British Independent Film Awards and Denver International Film Festival. The Reason I Jump is an immersive cinematic exploration of neurodiversity through the experiences of nonspeaking autistic people from around the world. The film blends Higashida’s revelatory insights into autism, written when he was just 13, with intimate portraits of five remarkable young people. It opens a window for audiences into an intense and overwhelming, but often joyful, sensory universe.

Moments in the lives of each of the characters are linked by the journey of a young Japanese boy through an epic landscape; narrated passages from Naoki’s writing reflect on what his autism means to him and others, how his perception of the world differs, and why he acts in the way he does: the reason he jumps. The film distills these elements into a sensually rich tapestry that leads us to Naoki’s core message: not being able to speak does not mean there is nothing to say.

Relaxed Screenings are designed to make the cinema experience accessible and are for anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed environment-this can include but is not limited to Neurodivergent People who experience sensory processing differences (Autistic People, ADHD People), people with learning disabilities, people with dementia as well as those living with anxiety or who have experienced trauma.
Our Relaxed Screenings focus on adapting the cinema environment and preparing patrons by developing pre-show resources. Lighting and sound may be adjusted, and the doors will remain open to allow patrons to take a break in a designated quiet area. The film will contain open captions and specialised on-screen content warning symbols which allow the viewer to anticipate the more intense moments in the film: emotional, aural or visual.

We welcome all viewers to this session, however if you would prefer not to attend a Relaxed session, please contact us at hello@thornburypicturehouse.com.au to move your tickets to a different screening.
