The Magic Lantern and Melbourne

The Friends of the National Film & Sound Archive is proud to present a rare experience of Australian early media: The Magic Lantern and Melbourne/

Magic Lanternist extraordinaire, Martyn Jolly, will dazzle the audience with his original, biunial magic lantern and authentic glass slides in a rare opportunity to directly experience Australian visual media direct from the turn of last century when hand coloured glass slides were animated and performed in theatres to narration and music.

This live recreation will whirl pure colours across the audience, while stories are told, songs are sung, and animated bodies grotesquely transmogrify before your eyes.

As a special part of this magic lantern show we will project precious hand-coloured slides originally staged and photographed in Melbourne in the early 1900s and recently inscribed into the UNESCO Australia Memory of the World Register.

You will gasp and laugh, and oooh and aaah, just like they did then.

The show will be of particular interest to students of the history animation, cinema, photography and theatre.

This exclusive performance is not to be missed.
