Babylon (1980) + Dennis Bovell Intro

Like the reggae music that pulses through it, Babylon is rich, rough and real. And like the street life of the young black Londoners it portrays, it’s threatening, touching, violent and funny ” Simon Perry, Variety

“The Eighty-Six, Main Title Theme and Thornbury Picture House present:
A Night at the Cinema with the Dubmaster with pre and post film tunes from Derrick Heartical Hi-Fi.

Babylon (1980) & Lovers Rock (2020)

Strictly one-night only: To kick-off his residency for the Eighty-Six Festival Dennis Bovell will be in the House and in conversation with RRR legend Systa BB to present a double bill of two reggae film classics, both blessed with some of his finest production work and released forty years apart.

After a sell-out run in 2022 Franco Rosso’s (Quadrophenia, Dread Beat An Blood) ode to soundsystem culture Babylon returns for one final dance, followed by a very rare big screen presentation of Steve McQueens (Hunger, 12 Years a Slave) made-for-TV masterpiece Lovers Rock.

BABYLON is not only an ode to UK sound system culture, it’s also a searing portrait of social tension in Thatcher-era South London, set to a pulsing dubwise soundtrack featuring the likes of Dennis Bovell, Jah Shaka and Aswad.

The screening of BABYLON will be followed by an in-conversation with Dennis Bovell and Systa BB, then we’ll have a short break and then we’ll go into LOVERS ROCK. Those with tickets to Babylon will be given priority to LOVERS ROCK (free screening). Those wishing to just attend LOVERS ROCK will be allocated sets on a first in best dressed on the night.
